Health Services
Riverside Indian School provides comprehensive health services to ensure that all students have access to medical care and support for a safe and healthy school experience. Our school nurse collaborates closely with staff, parents/guardians and students to maintain a health-focused environment.
Student Illness Procedures
If a student becomes ill, they must request a pass from their teacher to visit the school nurse at the RIS Health Center. In non-emergency situations, transportation home will be arranged for day students. In emergencies, students are transported to the nearest health facility with staff remaining with them, and parents/guardians are promptly notified.
Medication Administration
The nurse dispenses medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, according to the BIE’s Medication Administration Policy.
Medical Emergencies
For severe health concerns, Riverside Indian School ensures immediate transportation to a local hospital. Parents/guardians are contacted immediately, and a staff member remains with the student until the emergency is resolved.
Counseling Services
Students at Riverside Indian School have access to individual and group counseling. A referral form can be completed by a parent, staff member or students themselves. Counseling remains confidential, with exceptions as required by law. Students are encouraged to seek counseling for issues related to academics, personal challenges or substance abuse. Traditional Native counseling practices are also available, supporting students’ cultural and spiritual well-being.
Behavioral Interventions
The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program motivates students to succeed academically and maintain good behavior through an annual incentive trip. Criteria include maintaining a minimum grade average, regular attendance and an incident-free record.
Infectious Disease Control
Riverside Indian School follows strict guidelines to control communicable diseases, collaborating with the Indian Health Service. In an outbreak, affected students are promptly evaluated and may be isolated if necessary. Parents/guardians are informed of all necessary details, including disease symptoms, prevention measures and the school’s control measures.
Riverside Indian School's health services emphasize proactive care and swift response to ensure the well-being of every student on campus, helping to maintain a healthy and supportive learning environment.
