Building Stronger Futures Through Prevention and Wellness

Red Ribbon advertisement about Substance Use and Misuse Prevention Month

October is Substance Use and Misuse Prevention Month, a time to recognize the strength of tribal communities and the importance of protecting the health and well-being of BIE students and their families. Prevention efforts help support emotional and social development in youth, strengthen family connections, and address the lasting impacts of trauma. Culturally grounded, evidence-based programs in schools and communities are vital in creating safe, stable environments where Native youth and families can grow and succeed.

Starting alcohol or drug use at a young age increases the risk of developing a substance use disorder later in life. Early prevention, rooted in community values and cultural traditions, helps reduce these risks and builds resilience. By working together, tribal communities can continue to promote healing, wellness, and a brighter future for the next generations of tribal leaders.

The BIE Behavioral Health and Wellness Program offers free and confidential behavioral health and wellness services. The 24/7 Call Line is accessible to all BIE staff and students by dialing 1-844-ASK-BHWP (1-844-275-2497). Selecting Option 1 connects the caller with a trained mental health professional who can provide immediate support.
